I was a student of Phil and Karen Moore’s at pivotal point in my life.
They taught me the interconnected nature of science, the arts, and collaboration, which was a foundational lesson for my career in space exploration.
Their love for teaching and commitment to the unique beauty of every one of their students is an increasingly rare ideology that this book puts into words to share with the world.”

We must follow what might seem like a radical pedagogy in our current atmosphere of testing …
Visionary, and practical! Phillip takes us on a journey through a multitude of stories that paint a clear picture of children’s lives — what they bring to a school, to each other, and to our collective future. And their stories tell us to STOP educating children in factory-like settings, where — due to rigid schedules and curriculum expectations not of their own making, and constant interruptions to authentic learning experiences — children are depleted and disheartened. Instead, we must follow what might seem like a radical pedagogy in our current atmosphere of testing and standardization. We must have the courage to create true places for children and adults to work together to create learning centers where the “community of truth is practiced” (a phrase borrowed from Parker Palmer, “The Courage to Teach”). According to Moore, those places for learning, the ones that bring out the best in children and their teachers, are mostly outdoors interacting with nature and having opportunities to explore to the edges of possibility. Amazingly, all of the typical curriculum expectations ARE met, and then some, when we allow children to lead the way.
Upland Hills, while 40 years old, actually shines a light on a pedagogy for the future. It is simple, profound, fun, enlightening, and eminently practical. I read this book in only a few sittings, and have recommended to my teacher education program as required reading for the psychology courses. It’s a MUST READ for educators and parents everywhere!

A Gamechanger for our Children and what is possible for Education…
Every once in a while, you read a book that shifts the course of your thinking. One that lights a fire and aligns your trajectory of purpose. Told through the stories of the mentors and guides and children that shaped and evolved the Upland Hills Community, like Ram Dass and Buckminster Fuller, “The Future of Children” makes a paradigm shift in living and learning, alive, real and accessible. Reading Phillip’s book is like reading a re-awakening to authentic learning; something that strikes a chord deeply. His voice is filled with truth and grace and deep wisdom. What took hold of me and might never let go is how we can reshape education moment-to-moment, child-by-child, community-to-community. And the promise and beauty of that possibility is so worth working for, with our best and highest effort, with this blueprint of love.

It is with great joy when I read a book that exercises a wide range of my feelings.
It is with great joy when I read a book that exercises a wide range of my feelings. The Future of Children, written by Phil Moore, a gentle and wise man that I have known now for some 57 years, really begs the question: “What is the future of children?” Phil has spent his entire life seeking spiritual mentors and those who think ‘outside of the box’. This book is Phil’s turn, now, to share with his readers all of his years of learning what it is to be human.
As a psychotherapist and former school teacher, myself, I know that Phil’s life exemplifies love and compassion. Love and compassion for the other can only begin with the self. Phil recognizes that all children (even the child in each of our adult selves) have potential. As mothers, fathers, teachers, leaders and people of all sorts, we have the obligation to assist each child to realize their own unique potential. In order to do this, we must start with the self. Phil weaves his real-life experiences… some joyful…some very painful, with an awareness that defines what it is to be truly human.
